Small Farmer Economic Development Supported by Jamaican Business

The Jamaica Farmers Access to Regional Markets (JA-FARMS) addresses the plight of small farmers and their communities in Jamaica by leveraging investment made in the industry and the commitment of leading Jamaican Agribusinesses to purchase from small growers.  This partnership attacks the causes of rural poverty to the benefit of industry.  Networks of small growers are being linked to established markets through an innovative value chain.  This relationship seeks to increase small holder income by 100%, while also growing exports of value added agriculture products, and creating jobs.  In addition to strong market linkages, the relationship provides Jamaican farmers the basis for investment in the latest cost-effective/appropriate technology production practices.  Because technical support is provided through the market, (purchasing Agribusinesses), prior knowledge, training, or education is not required of growers.  As an example, the grower pictured above had no experience with greenhouse production or even farming prior to this project.

The Global Development Alliance brought together progressive Jamaican agribusinesses with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)  Mission in Kingston and Citizens Development Corps in this ground breaking agriculture  development project.  The ambitious 18 month pilot

phase, initiated in July 2006, increases small farmer income while also establishing communities of prosperous farmers.  These communities will become industry partners capable of building the marketing and trade infrastructure needed to thrive in the local as well as regional and global marketplaces.
